Keeping the magnet clean is actually done with ease by simply lifting the handle in an upward motion. Using a vacuum is probably the best method for getting it clean of all the metal debris. Then the metal debris are actually inspected and written down for the records. Once the magnet is free of all these metal and ferrous properties the magnet is simply set back down closing it back up.
